Google Shopping Ads Guide for Singapore Stores

Google Shopping ads are the product listings — image, price, store name and reviews — that appear at the top of Google when someone searches for something to buy. For Singapore online stores they’re often the highest-return ad format, because shoppers see the product and price before they click, so the clicks you pay for are already qualified. But Shopping works very differently from search ads: there are no keywords. Here’s how it actually works and how to make it profitable.

It starts with the Merchant Centre feed

Unlike search ads, you don’t bid on keywords for Shopping. Instead, Google decides when to show your products based on your product feed in Google Merchant Centre. The feed is the foundation — if it’s poor, no amount of bidding fixes it. Each product needs accurate, complete data:

  • Title — the most important field. Front-load it with what people search: brand, product type, key attributes (e.g. “Brand Running Shoes Men’s Lightweight”), not a clever marketing name.
  • Description, product type and Google product category — accurate and detailed.
  • Image — clean, high-quality, on a white background where possible.
  • Price and availability — must match your site exactly, in SGD, or Google disapproves the product.
  • GTIN/brand — supply these where they exist; they help Google match your product to searches.

Optimising titles and feed data is the single biggest lever in Google Shopping ads performance.

Set up Merchant Centre correctly

Before products can show, you need Merchant Centre configured and verified:

  • Verify and claim your website.
  • Set up shipping and Singapore tax/GST settings accurately — mismatches cause disapprovals.
  • Connect Merchant Centre to your Google Ads account.
  • Keep the feed fresh — automatic updates or scheduled fetches so prices and stock stay current.

Feed disapprovals are the most common reason Shopping campaigns underperform; fix them promptly.

Structure your Shopping campaigns

Because you can’t pick keywords, you control performance through campaign structure and bidding. A common approach:

  • Segment by product groups — split by category, brand, margin or best-sellers so you can bid differently on different products.
  • Prioritise high-margin and proven products with more budget and aggressive bids.
  • Use search terms and negatives — even without keyword targeting, you can see the searches that triggered your products and add negatives to cut irrelevant traffic.

This structure-and-segmentation work is where Shopping campaigns are won, and it’s central to how we run e-commerce accounts through our Google Ads management in Singapore.

Optimise for return on ad spend

Judge Shopping on return on ad spend (ROAS), not clicks. With conversion tracking and conversion values set up, you can:

  • Use Target ROAS smart bidding once you have enough conversion data, so Google bids more on products and shoppers likely to convert profitably.
  • Identify and scale your winning products, and reduce spend on those that drain budget without returning.
  • Improve product pages and reviews — better conversion rates lift ROAS without extra ad spend.

Standard Shopping vs Performance Max

Google increasingly steers e-commerce advertisers toward Performance Max, which uses your product feed but runs across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube and Gmail automatically. It can drive strong results but gives you less visibility and control. Many Singapore stores run a mix — Performance Max for broad automated reach plus standard Shopping where they want tighter control — and let the data decide the balance.

What makes Google Shopping ads win the click

Because shoppers compare several listings side by side, small differences decide who gets the click. Beyond the feed basics, these factors influence whether buyers choose you:

  • Competitive pricing — your price is visible before the click, so being roughly in line with the market matters. If you’re premium, your image and reviews need to justify it.
  • Strong primary image — clear, well-lit, the product filling the frame. It’s the first thing the eye lands on.
  • Product ratings — star ratings from Google’s reviews programmes build trust and lift click-through.
  • Promotions and badges — sale prices and “special offer” annotations stand out in a row of listings.
  • Free or clear shipping — shipping cost and speed influence the choice, especially for Singapore delivery expectations.

You can’t control every variable, but optimising image, price positioning and reviews on your best-sellers gives you a real edge in a crowded Shopping row.

Frequently asked questions

Why aren’t my products showing in Shopping?

Usually a feed or Merchant Centre issue: disapproved products, mismatched prices between feed and site, missing required attributes, or unverified shipping/tax settings. Check the Diagnostics in Merchant Centre first — it lists exactly what’s wrong. Bidding too low or thin product data can also limit how often you show.

How do I optimise my Shopping product titles?

Treat titles like the keywords you can’t directly set. Front-load the terms shoppers search — brand, product type and key attributes like size, colour or material — within the first words, since those carry the most weight. Avoid promotional fluff and clever names; describe the product the way customers look for it.

Should I use Shopping or Performance Max?

Both can work. Performance Max maximises automated reach across Google’s networks using your feed, while standard Shopping gives you more control and visibility. Many stores test both and weight budget toward whichever delivers better ROAS for their products. Reliable conversion tracking is essential either way.
