On-Page SEO Checklist for SMEs

On-Page SEO Checklist for SMEs

Before you spend a dollar on backlinks or ads, get your own pages right. On-page SEO is everything you control directly on a webpage — the words, structure, tags and links — and for most Singapore SMEs it is the highest-return work you can do. This checklist walks through what to fix, in plain language, with no tools required beyond what you already have.

Why on-page SEO comes first

Search engines read your pages to decide what they are about and whether they answer a searcher’s query. If your page is unclear, slow or thin, no amount of link building will save it. On-page SEO is also the part you fully own — you do not need anyone else’s permission to improve a title tag or rewrite a paragraph. That makes it the natural starting point for any SME.

Get the basics on every page

Title tags

The title tag is the clickable headline in search results and one of the strongest on-page signals. Put the main keyword near the front, keep it under roughly 60 characters, and make it readable for a human — “Corporate Catering in Singapore | Halal-Certified” beats a string of stuffed keywords. Every page needs a unique title.

Meta descriptions

The meta description does not directly affect rankings, but it influences whether people click. Write 140–160 characters that sell the page and include the keyword naturally. Think of it as ad copy for your free listing.

Headings (H1–H3)

Use one clear H1 per page (usually the page title), then H2s and H3s to structure the content logically. Headings help both readers and search engines scan your page. Work your main topic into at least one heading, but write for clarity first.

Make the content genuinely useful

Good on-page SEO is mostly good content. Match what the searcher actually wants — if someone searches “how much does aircon servicing cost”, they want prices and options, not your company history.

  • Cover the topic fully — answer the obvious follow-up questions on the same page.
  • Use natural language — include the keyword and related terms where they fit, never force them.
  • Write for Singapore readers — use SGD, local examples, and the spelling and tone your customers use.
  • Keep it scannable — short paragraphs, bullet lists, and bold for key points.

Avoid thin pages with a couple of sentences. They rarely rank and they do not convince buyers either.

Internal links and URLs

Internal links pass relevance around your own site and help visitors find related pages. Link from blog posts to your service pages using descriptive anchor text, and from service pages to supporting content. This is one of the easiest on-page SEO wins SMEs ignore.

Keep URLs short and readable — /services/seo beats /page?id=2491. Use hyphens between words and include the keyword where it reads naturally. Do not change established URLs without setting up redirects.

Images and media

  • Descriptive file nameshalal-catering-buffet.jpg, not IMG_4821.jpg.
  • Alt text — describe the image for accessibility and search; include the keyword only if it genuinely fits.
  • Compressed files — large images slow your page, which hurts both rankings and conversions.

Technical on-page basics

A few technical items sit under on-page SEO and are worth checking, even if you are not technical:

  • Mobile-friendliness — most Singapore searches happen on phones; your page must work cleanly on a small screen.
  • Page speed — slow pages lose visitors. Compress images and avoid heavy, unnecessary scripts.
  • HTTPS — your site should load securely with a padlock.
  • No broken links — fix dead internal links and 404s as you find them.

You do not need to be perfect on day one. Fixing the worst offenders usually delivers most of the gain. Run your key pages through Google’s free PageSpeed Insights and the mobile preview in Search Console, then tackle the red flags first before chasing marginal improvements.

Structured data

Adding schema markup — the behind-the-scenes labels that tell Google what a page contains — can earn rich results like star ratings, FAQs or business details in the search listing. You do not need it everywhere, but FAQ and local business schema are low-effort wins for most Singapore SMEs and can lift your click-through rate without changing your rankings.

A simple monthly routine

On-page SEO is not a one-off. Set a light monthly habit: review your top pages, refresh anything outdated, improve titles that get impressions but few clicks, and add internal links from new content to your money pages. Pages that are kept current tend to hold rankings better than ones left to age. Frequently asked questions

How is on-page SEO different from off-page SEO?

On-page SEO covers everything on your own pages — content, titles, headings, internal links and technical health. Off-page SEO is mostly about signals from elsewhere, chiefly backlinks. You control on-page entirely, which is why it is the sensible place to start.

How long until on-page changes show results?

Search engines usually need to recrawl and reassess your pages, which can take days to a few weeks for established sites. Improvements to existing, indexed pages often show faster than brand-new content, which has to earn trust over months.

Do I need special tools to do on-page SEO?

To get started, no. You can action most of this checklist with your website editor and a clear head. Free tools like Google Search Console help you see which queries you appear for, and paid tools speed up audits, but the fundamentals are about clear, useful pages.
