VisualAid — Multilingual Healthcare Communication Design

Multilingual healthcare communication design — VisualAid

VisualAid is a set of illustrated, multilingual health tools — triage sheets, daily-care guides and safety instructions drawn so that language is never the barrier to care. Advent has taken the project on to keep it live, and this is the design story behind it.

Project: VisualAid  ·  Discipline: Visual communication & information design  ·  Since: 2020

Background

VisualAid began with a problem that no amount of translation software solves cleanly: a patient and a carer who do not share a language still have to communicate something urgent, quickly, and without misunderstanding. In Singapore that gap is everyday reality across Bengali, Tamil, Thai, Burmese and Hindi speakers, and it turns routine moments — describing pain, following a swab instruction, understanding a safety rule on site — into guesswork. Words alone were not enough; the answer had to be visual.

Over six years the project grew into seven illustrated collections — screening and triage, daily care and needs, a mobile rapid triage station, COVID swabs, construction safety, radiology instructions, and surgical mask do’s and don’ts — all free to download. The work earned genuine reach on its own merit, picked up by newsrooms and public-health networks precisely because good visual communication travels further than text ever could.

That is exactly the kind of problem a design studio should care about, which is why Advent took it on. The craft that makes an emergency triage sheet readable across five languages is the same craft that makes any brand clear across every touchpoint: reduce, structure, and let the picture carry the meaning.

Objectives

  • Let a patient and carer communicate without a shared language
  • Make each instruction readable at a glance, under stress
  • Hold one visual system consistent across five languages and seven collections
  • Keep every tool free, downloadable and easy to use in the field
  • Preserve and continue a resource that has served real users since 2020

Scope & deliverables

  • Illustrated information and graphic design across seven health collections
  • A consistent visual language spanning Bengali, Tamil, Thai, Burmese and Hindi
  • Print-ready, downloadable tools built for real clinical and worksite use

Our approach

The discipline here is subtraction. An anxious patient or a worker on a noisy site has no time to parse a paragraph, so every panel had to reduce a full instruction to one unmistakable image and a short line of text. The illustration does the heavy lifting — pointing to where it hurts, showing the swab going in, marking the do and the don’t — while the words simply confirm what the picture already says. That is information design at its most demanding: no decoration survives, only what communicates.

Consistency is what turns a stack of drawings into a system people can trust. Across seven collections and five languages, the same visual grammar had to hold — the same figures, the same colour logic, the same way a warning reads versus a reassurance — so that someone who has seen one sheet already knows how to read the next. It is the identical principle behind a strong brand: recognition compounds when every touchpoint follows the same rules, and confusion compounds when it does not.

Continuing the work matters as much as the original craft. A resource people rely on loses its value the moment it goes offline, so the priority was to keep VisualAid live, coherent and true to how it was built — the same clear hand, ready to extend into new collections as the need arises. Good design is not a one-off artefact; it is a system kept consistent long enough to become dependable.

  • Reduced each instruction to a single, glanceable image with confirming text
  • Held one visual grammar consistent across five languages and seven collections
  • Applied the same clarity-first thinking Advent brings to branding and design
  • Kept the full library free and downloadable for the people who use it

Final words

VisualAid is proof of a simple idea we build on every day: when a picture is designed well enough, it communicates faster and more honestly than any sentence. Advent is proud to keep the project alive and to carry the same clarity into the identities and communication we design for our clients.
