Sushijiro: Food Photography for Japanese Catering

Appetite-led food photography for Sushijiro, a Japanese catering brand serving omakase, bento, buffet and sushi.

Sushijiro logo and brand identity

Sushijiro is a Japanese F&B caterer where the food has to sell itself on sight — so our work was the food photography that makes omakase, bento, buffet and sushi look as good as they taste.

Client: Sushijiro  ·  Industry: Japanese F&B catering  ·  Year: 2026

Background

Sushijiro caters Japanese cuisine across omakase, bento, buffet and sushi, carrying an elegant script and a brushstroke-and-chopsticks mark. In catering, the menu is the product, and customers commit to a spread — often for an event or a crowd — before they ever taste it. That makes the imagery the salesperson: people decide what to order largely from how it looks.

Food photography is unforgiving in this category. Sushi and Japanese cuisine reward precision: freshness, texture, colour and the discipline of presentation all have to read in a single frame. There is little room to hide — a slightly tired piece of fish or flat lighting is immediately obvious, and Japanese food in particular is judged on its visual restraint and care.

Done well, the photos make someone hungry and confident enough to book; done poorly, even excellent food looks ordinary online and the brand’s craft goes unseen. The photography is not decoration here — it is the most direct evidence a prospective customer has of the quality on offer.

Objectives

  • Capture the freshness and craft of the food in every frame
  • Build a library of images that work across menus, web and social
  • Make catering spreads look appetising and premium before tasting
  • Reflect the brand’s elegant, refined character in the photography

Scope & deliverables

  • Food photography across omakase, bento, buffet and sushi
  • A consistent image set ready for menus, website and social channels
  • Styling and lighting tuned to Japanese cuisine and presentation

Our approach

We approached the shoot the way the food is made — with attention to detail. Lighting and styling were set to bring out freshness and texture without over-processing, so the sushi looks like sushi and the colour reads true. Over-styled food photography can look impressive but dishonest; we aimed for appetising and accurate, so what a customer sees is what arrives. The brushstroke-and-chopsticks character of the brand guided the mood: refined, clean and unmistakably Japanese.

Because the images had to work across catering menus, the website and social feeds, we shot with that range in mind from the start — composing for different crops and contexts so one session produced a flexible, cohesive library rather than a handful of one-off hero shots. A buffet spread, an individual bento and a close detail of a single piece each ask for a different treatment, and we planned coverage to capture all of them.

Consistency tied it together. Across very different dishes, the lighting, colour and styling were kept coherent, so the whole set looks like one brand presenting its range — not a patchwork of images shot on different days. That coherence is what lets the photography support an elegant, premium positioning: when every dish is shot to the same standard, the whole menu reads as the work of a caterer who cares about every detail.

Final words

Sushijiro now has food photography that does the food justice — fresh, appetising and on-brand — and a versatile image set ready to work wherever the menu appears.
